Like people, animals are subject to accidents and illness. “When you think of caring for animals, the first person you think of is a veterinarian, in the same way when we see the sick, injured dogs in the street of Boudha we think of Street Dog Care- when there is an emergency situation, it’s Street Dog Care that gives the first treatment to the dogs of Boudha. They know how to respond appropriately.” Critically ill animals must be monitored closely in the veterinary hospital for a period of time depending on the severity of the illness or injury. We are happy whenever such cases arises, Street Dog Care handle it very properly.

In 2016, Shenpen supported 4 dogs for their emergency cases through Street Dog Care.

Tsering:

One evening, a wonderful lady from Boudhanath named Phuti, who loves animals, found a poor dog lying in a ditch near Mahankal Road. The white dog was unable to move, eat or drink. It was a heart-wrenching sight. She immediately asked Shenpen how this poor dog could be helped. As all the animal shelters we could reach at the late hour of Phuti’s call were full, we brought the dog to a vet with an excellent reputation, but before we dropped the dog off at the vet’s office. We named the dog Tsering, which is Tibetan for ‘Long Life’, hoping that with such a name, there would be a miracle and the dog would survive.

The next morning we received a call from the Vet. After checking the dog, he said that there was no chance of survival and that we needed to put Tsering down, but we were not ready to give up yet. We contacted the manager of Street Dog Care, who was eager to give it a try to save Tsering’s life. It was wonderful to see the amount of love and care they put into trying to help him. Tsering had surgery a couple of days ago, but more treatment and surgeries might be needed.

Tsering, is now off the streets and in a loving environment where he can regain his health and enjoy life. For now, Tsering is doing fine. He had one of his legs amputated to prevent further infection.
