Thanks to a generous grant from C.H.A.N.C.E. for Nepal (UK), Street Dog Care was able to successfully vaccinate 800 street dogs against rabies in April 2013!

Starting at the Boudha Stupa, a famous pilgrimage site for Tibetan Buddhists, our volunteer teams covered different areas – from monasteries to a beggars’ camp, and from main roads to tiny lanes. We tried to vaccinate every single street dog in Boudha. “And believe me there are many, many dogs,” Verena, one of the volunteers said.

The camps took place over two hot and dusty weekends in April 2013. The work was divided amongst 20 volunteers and 6 veterinarians, from diverse nationalities, such as Nepal, America, Germany, Australia, Spain and Brazil . “In my team we avoided using muzzles and chains. Instead, our gentle method involved attracting the dogs with cookies, then singing and patting them as the vet administered the injection,” Sara explained. In addition to vaccinating dogs, Street Dog Care distributed 3,000 flyers, written in English and Nepali, in order to educate both children and adults how to specifically recognize the symptoms of rabies as well as safe ways to behave around dogs in general.
